St Pons de Thomières
The town was born from the junction of two cities.
The start point was located in the numerous caves of the hills
surrounding the river Jaur. There, neolithic population took place and
later on grouped close to the river source. Till the 10th century they
made houses and founded gradually the first city named Thomières. Then,
Raymond Pons, Count of Toulouse decided to build an abbey on the other
side of the river. Other inhabitants came there and grouped their homes
near the fortified abbey. They founded the second city named St Pons.
The union of both cities made St Pons de Thomières
Later, the city became an important administrative and cultural center,
one of the most important towns of the diocese. It reaches its apex
between the 17th and the 19th century when the abundance of natural
resources (wood, water, wool, leather) enabled the constitution of a
powerful local industrial system.
The most significant testimonial of the rich
history of the city is the cathedral where a strange disposition of the
nave versus the choir can be observed and which hosted a beautiful
classified organ. You will also appreciate the neolithic museum and the
Courniou cave where millenaries of water work have sculpted what they
call here the "Palace of threaded glass"
Lacaune
Above everything, Lacaune reflects
hard human effort. This is a place where men and rocks are the same,
strong and rounded like the huge granite stones spreaded over the
country by neolithic people.
The geography and the climate have obliged them to develop a sharp sense
of hospitality and mutual aid. Centuries of difficult life have also
polished them in their ability to use and accomodate any crumb of
natural resource.
They have acquired an unmatchable capacity to cook the products of their
earth, making delectable delicatessen, cheeses, honeys, trouts,
mushrooms, crayfishes, and the list is much longer !
Sports and nature
The place takes the full benefit of the presence
of water, sun and forest. Three large artificial lakes, are carefully
fited-up for any imaginable nautic practice. Fortunately, this is not
all ! A multiplicity of tracks and trails give opportunity for any kind
of hiking riding or driving, whatever the level.
One word: Enjoy !
And much much more ...
